Leadership

Executive Director, Almeta R. Keys (2007 - Current) -  Almeta Richards Keys is currently transitioning from a national Head Start fellow in the Office of Head Start to the position of Executive Director of the Edward C. Mazique Parent Child Center in Washington, DC. She has held the positions of Director, then Executive Head Start Director of the St. Mary Vermillion Community Action Agency, Inc. Head Start program in Franklin, Louisiana, from 1989 until August 24, 2007. Her professional background includes serving as visiting professor at Columbia university, a Consultant for  BHM International, Inc., an Instructor with the national Head Start Association Administrators Academy, and a federal Head Grants & Monitoring Reviewer. She was a 1996 Head Start Johnson & Johnson Fellow, and the first recipient of the national Helen Hollingshed Taylor Memorial Scholarship. She has volunteered with various organizations including the Lambda Iota Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She earned her masters degree in education and bachelors degree in behavioral science from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Almeta is a former Head Start parent who has a passion for children, and is excited about the opportunity to forge new partnerships and continue to work on the delivery of high quality services at the Mazique Center in the District of Columbia, as well as nationally.

Executive Director, Charlene A. Johnson (2004 - 2007) -
Serving 15 years at the Edward C. Mazique Parent Child Center, Inc. in a variety of administrative and management positions, Mrs. Charlene Johnson assumed a leadership role in the organization in September of 2004. A native Washingtonian, Mrs. Johnson remains committed to serving those most in need in her community. Lending her business background and legal expertise to an organization in transition, she continued to work toward ensuring the viability of a community-based organization that has served families with young children for more than 39 years. “Strengthening systems and maintaining quality services” were the focus of a restructured Mazique Team of talented staff, committed parents and supportive community partners, including Board members. It was Mrs. Johnson’s goal to continue to have each of these groups effectively working together “to promote the maximum growth and development of young children” in the Nation’s Capital.

Charlene Johnson holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Management from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). She earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Law School, and has been a member of the District of Columbia Bar since 1985.

Executive Director, Leslie A. Johnson (1996 - 2004)  - We remember the passing on August 19, 2004 of our former Executive Director, Mrs. Leslie A. Johnson. In her MEMORY all who knew her pledged to remain true to her desire to educate others, and to advocate for those who could not advocate for themselves… and to always “Place Children & Families First”.

Committed to the principles of Head Start, including early intervention, partnerships with families and serving special populations, Mrs. Leslie Johnson brought her expertise to the Edward C. Mazique Parent Child Center, Inc. in 1996 as the result of a nationwide search for a leader to take the agency forward after the retirement of its Founding Executive Director. Bringing with her more than 16 years of experience in serving low-income families with young children at the helm of a Head Start Center in Delaware, Mrs. Johnson quickly assimilated herself into the local community that advocates on behalf of young children in the Nation’s Capitol.

As Mazique’s leader since 1996, Mrs. Johnson had successfully guided the agency internally toward organizational stability and externally toward community expansion. Leslie A. Johnson was a valued member of several Advisory Boards in the District of Columbia related to early intervention, health services to the city’s most vulnerable populations, and teenage pregnancy & effective parenting. She was also actively involved in local, regional and national Head Start organizations, collaborations and partnerships; including the National Head Start Association (NHSA) Board of Directors.

She was a graduate of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a member of the Johnson & Johnson Management Fellows Program.

Founding Executive Director, Ruth E. Rucker (1968- 1996) - The Founding Executive Director, Mrs. Ruth E. Rucker, has been a trailblazer in the Head Start community since its inception in 1965. She began as a Parent Involvement Coordinator for 168 Head Start Centers in the South Bronx, New York until 1968 when she brought  her skills and expertise to the District of Columbia. Working in partnership with the United Planning Organization, Mrs. Rucker spearheaded the effort to establish the first PCC in the nation's capitol. On leave from the agency in 1980, she became the Chief of Child Day Care Services within the Department of Human Services for the District of Columbia Government.

Returning in 1982 to the center at the request of the Board of Directors, she led the organization toward "numerous" accomplishments and "firsts"; including the concept of a longitudinal education program (prenatal to 5 year), establishing the first infant center in DC, the first on-site medical suite in a child development center, child care at the work site, as well as, for those seeking employment & involved in job training.

Her proudest moment was the construction of the Mazique Center headquarters building in 1992. She remains an active voice in public affairs and the faith-based community in the District of Columbia. Following her retirement she served as a consultant until the appointment of her successor.

Governance is the shared responsibility of the Parent Policy Council/Committee and the Board of Directors.

Parents
Parent involvement is essential to the operation of the Mazique Center and its programs.

Parents and families have different opportunities for involvement. Classroom and Home-based meetings are held bi-monthly, along with Parent/Staff Association meetings; Group socializations for home-based parents are held monthly. The Parent Policy Council/Committee also convenes on a monthly basis.

The programs at the Mazique Center offer a sense of belonging and a chance to be involved in the child’s education, as well as activities to help the whole family. Parents can take part in training on many subjects such as “positive parenting, career development, mental wellness, health care, nutrition & cooking classes, utilizing community resources, English as a Second Language, early literacy and more!”
